Litter production from meat birds generally contains a mixture of saw dust or straw and manure. A production figure of 1.72kg of litter per broiler per seven weeks was used to calculate the litter production (wet weight). This figure was obtained from the Poultry hub website and is a generic Australia wide figure. The web address for this data is,

The total litter production figures were calculated using the collated LGA bird numbers and the average litter production for broilers. The equation used to calculate the weekly litter production is,

Litter production (t/yr) = farm capacity * (1.72/7)/1000*52

It is important to note that the birds are turned over every 7 weeks and this may impact on the weekly availability of litter.
