GP Catchment 2023 - Modified Monash Model 2023

Created 23/10/2025

Updated 23/10/2025

General Practitioner Catchment (GPC): Developed by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, GPCs are custom geographic areas built from ABS ASGS 2021 boundaries (SA1, SA2, SA3, UCL). These catchments provide a more accurate view of where patients access GP services. Modified Monash Model (MMM): MMM is a classification system that defines the remoteness of Australian locations, ranging from MM 1 (major cities) to MM 7 (very remote areas). It combines population size and geographic remoteness to support health workforce planning, especially in rural and remote communities. MMM is based on ASGS Remoteness Areas and updated after each Census. Estimated Resident Population (ERP): ERP is the official estimate of Australia’s population, linking people to their usual place of residence. It includes all people who usually live in Australia (except foreign diplomatic personnel and their families), regardless of nationality or legal status.
