203fbc23-eaa2-4628-a066-9bd64753c0ae urn:uuid eng UTF-8 nonGeographicDataset nonGeographicDataset 2025-06-23T12:25:16 creation ISO 19115 2016 National ESD Subprogram 203fbc23-eaa2-4628-a066-9bd64753c0ae As part of the commitment to manage WA marine resources according to the principles of ecologically sustainable development (ESD), the Department of Fisheries, WA has taken a leading role in the National subprogram that is developing the tools to implement ESD (see also www.fisheries-esd.com for more details). This initiative is funded by FRDC and has been underway for the past 4 years during which time a framework to complete an assessment of how well an individual fishery is meeting ESD objectives has been developed. These assessments cover not only the target species, but also include assessments of the impacts on bycatch and the broader ecosystem. There is also the capacity to assess the social and economic impacts of the fishery at a number of levels. In WA, this framework has been used to generate the applications needed to meet the Australian Governments' EPBC Act requirements, which are now needed for all export fisheries. The current activities in the subprogram include finalizing a framework to assess ESD for aquaculture; developing frameworks to assess multi fishery issues and eventually marine planning issues (which will cover all activities within a region).
