Species covered include:\n\n- threatened species \n\n- migratory species \n\n- marine species\n\n- cetaceans \n\n- non-native species that threaten biodiversity\n\n- species in other countries covered by international agreements that Australia is a party to.\n\n\n\nThreatened and migratory species data is available in a generalised gridded form for public download as the Species of National Environmental Significance Map Summary Version.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe Spatial information is stored in a geographic information system and links to the Taxon and Species Profile tables through the taxon identifier.\n\n\n\nSource data were provided from a range of government, industry and non-government organisations.\n\n\n\nTesting is carried out using expert opinion, and/or through reference to published information.\n\n\n\nThe lineage of each species map is detailed in the stored item.\n\n\n\nThe map summary version consists of polygons of threatened or migratory species extracted from the database using a python script, gridded to 0.1 degree and converted to asc format. The gridded data is then placed in a map template and saved as a png format map with the extraction date and taxon id indicated. Map summary species distributions have been generalised to 0.1&#xB0; (\\~10km) grid cells.\n\n\n\n     Data quality report - Attribute accuracy: \n\nTests are undertaken to ensure that there are no errors for the following attributes:\n\n- TAXON identifiers are unique, valid and within the allocated range\n\n- Presence categories in the database are one of:\n\n- Species or species habitat is likely to occur within area\n\n- Breeding recorded within area\n\n- Breeding or breeding habitat likely to occur within area\n\n- Roosting recorded within area\n\n- Foraging recorded within area\n\n- Listed Critical Habitat\n\n\n\nGeneralised presence categories in the map summary version are one of:\n\n2- Species or species habitat is likely to occur within area \n\n1- Species or species habitat may occur within area\n\n\n\nWhere additional areas have been added to a distribution through the use of an automated modelling tool at a higher level of presence than existing mapped areas, they have been altered to the existing minimum values\n\n\n\n     Data quality report - Conceptual consistency: \n\nScripts ensure that each map has consistent fields, and standard codes are used throughout.\n\n\n\n     Data quality report - Completeness: \n\nThe database is being updated as the lists of species on schedules of the EPBC Act are amended, and new information on distribution becomes available. Updates are undertaken when new data becomes available and resources permit. \n\n\n\nBased on sensitive species policies, the maps of these species are withheld from the map summary version : Wollemi Pine Wollemia nobilis (NSW); Spotted Handfish Brachionichthys hirsutus (Tas); Ziebell's Handfish, Waterfall Bay Handfish Brachiopsilus ziebelli (Tas); Red Handfish Thymichthys politus (Tas); Swan Galaxias Galaxias fontanus (Tas); Kings Lomatia Lomatia tasmanica (Tas).
