Created 23/10/2025

Updated 23/10/2025

General Practitioner Catchment (GPC): Created by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, GPCs are custom geographic areas built from ABS ASGS 2021 boundaries (SA1, SA2, SA3, UCL). These catchments provide a more accurate view of where patients access GP services. Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2): SA2s are mid-sized geographic units in the ASGS, constructed from SA1s to represent communities with shared social and economic ties. There are 2,473 SA2s across Australia, including codes for people without fixed locations. SA2s are widely used for publishing non-Census ABS statistics, such as health and population estimates, and underpin larger regional structures like SA3s, Significant Urban Areas, and Tourism Regions.
