                <gco:CharacterString>The mechanically harvested vegetable residue production data is based on the estimated carrot, potato and onion production, from the 2015-16 statistical area 2 (SA2) level, an Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) that is part of the ABS geographical framework for collection and dissemination of geographically classified statistics. SA2s are general-purpose medium sized areas, representing a community that interacts together socially and economically and generally have a population range of 3,000 to 25,000 persons. They can be linked to LGAs through correspondence tables that ABS provides. LGA’s with less than 5 Tonnes of carrot, potato or onion production were excluded from the analysis.</gco:CharacterString>

            <mri:abstract>
                <gco:CharacterString>Vegetable residue volumes have been estimated by using a conversion factor for paddock losses on the amounts of carrot, potatoes and onions produced that is reported in the 2015-16 SA2 data. Individual loss percentages were sourced from literature for each of the vegetables and this was used with their production to generate individual loss volumes. These were then combined to give an overall mechanical harvest residue estimate. Mechanically harvested vegetables were grouped together as residues are likely to be available for a lower cost than hand harvested vegetables due to having already been harvested and stockpiled. With hand harvesting they are left in the field and there is a significant cost associated with obtaining the residues to cover harvest costs.
Paddock loss estimates used were: Carrots 31%, Onions 25%, Potato’s 4.4%. Dry weights were calculated using an average dry weight percentage of 13.8%. This average figure varies from 10.9-18.9% depending on the crop.

Residue volumes that are actually produced may vary from what is reported. However, data should give an indication of what is available at each location.
