Geoscape Administrative Boundaries is Australia’s most comprehensive national collection of boundaries, including government, statistical and electoral boundaries. It is built and maintained by Geoscape Australia using authoritative government data. Further information about contributors to Administrative Boundaries is available here.

This dataset comprises seven Geoscape products:

  • Localities
  • Local Government Areas (LGAs)
  • Wards
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Boundaries
  • Electoral Boundaries
  • State Boundaries and
  • Town Points

Updated versions of Administrative Boundaries are published on a quarterly basis.

Users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing either GDA94 or GDA2020 datums.

Notable changes in the November 2023 Administrative Boundaries release

  • The Queensland Local Government Area of ‘Moreton Bay Regional’ has been renamed to ‘Moreton Bay City’. The ‘Moreton Bay Regional’ Local Government Area has been retired.

  • Three additional Local Government Areas have also had records retired within the lga_locality table. Two from NSW: Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council - Locality of ‘Back Creek’, Strathfield Municipal Council - Locality of ‘Belfield’ and one from QLD: Barcaldine Regional - Localities of ‘Quetta’ and ‘Laglan’.

  • There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1000 sqkm to the DC of the Lower Eyre Peninsula Local Government Area.

  • 1 locality has been retired in NSW: Back Creek (locality_pid = ‘loc365c9229b366’). The area of this locality was amalgamated into the locality of Mongarlowe (locality_pid ‘loc1db45efffa).

  • The locality of Balmoral (locality_pid = ‘loc11112536618e’) has had a name change to ‘Balmoral Village’. This name change has been applied by the jurisdiction to differentiate two localities in NSW that previously had the same name of ‘Balmoral’. The locality_pid for this locality has been retained.

  • There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1000 sqkm to the ‘Gurindji’,’Alpha’,’Laglan’,’Hawkwood’,’Keera’, ‘Blackall’,’ Mongarlowe’, ‘Torrens Creek’, ’Aramac’, ’Muttaburra’, ’Boggabilla’,’ Pallamallawa’,’ Clermont’,’Yalloroi’,’ Ilfracombe’,’ Kimbolton’,’ Balfours Peak’,’ Dinoga’,’ Willows’,’ Calliope’,’ Carnarvon Park’,’ Mantuan Downs’,’ Tanami East’,’ Glenning Valley’,’ Berkeley Vale’,’ Buckland’,’ Nandowrie’,’Elgin’, ’Peak Vale’, ’Coffin Bay’,’Talandji’,’Cobbadah’,’Wooderson’,’ Delungra’,’ Barcaldine’,’ Blue Nobby’,’ Tulloona’,’ Crooble’,’ Exmouth Gulf’,’ Gulf Creek’,’ Longreach’,’ Bundarra’,’ Bundarra’,’ Lochington’,’ Cheltenham’,’ Pentland’,’ Quetta’,’ Jericho’ and ‘ Lajamanu ‘ localities.

  • 6 New wards have been added and 41 wards have been retired in Western Australia. There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1000 sqkm to 24 wards in Western Australia.

  • From November 2023, Geoscape will be progressively moving product descriptions, guides and reports online to https://docs.geoscape.com.au.

Notable changes in the November 2022 release:

  • The November 2022 release includes: updates to the State Electoral Boundaries for Victoria to include the Electoral Boundaries Redivision 2021 which came into effect on 1 November 2022; small changes to the way Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are represented to Wards and Local Government Areas; the ABS Boundaries inclusion and flattening of 2021 Significant Urban Areas (SUA), Urban Centres and Localities (UCL), Section of State (SOS), and Section of the State Range (SOSR) boundary files to improve accessibility and addition of population and dwelling counts to 2021 Mesh Blocks.

  • Please note that the Local Government Area ‘lga_name’ attribute field length will be increased to 75 in the May 2023 release. Geoscape is planning to remove the 2011 ABS data layers from the ABS Boundaries product in a future release.

License Information

The Australian Government has negotiated the release of Administrative Boundaries to the whole economy under an open CCBY 4.0 licence.

Users must only use the data in ways that are consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles issued under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

What to Expect When You Download Administrative Boundaries

Administrative Boundaries is large dataset (around 1.5GB unpacked), made up of seven themes each containing multiple layers.

Users are advised to read the technical documentation including the product change notices and the individual product descriptions before downloading and using the product.
