Updated 09/08/2023

Data showing trend changes in the percentage area of all land prepared for crops and pastures under different tillage practices (1995 - 2012): no cultivation (apart from herbicide spraying or sowing); one or two cultivations; and three or more cultivations.

The data was sourced from ABARES (Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources) who have derived the dataset from customised data provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The data inputs include: the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) data for 2007-08, 2009-10 and 2011-12 together with Agricultural Census data for 1995-96, 2000-01 and 2010-11, customised by commodity groupings. The data has been used by the Department of Environment and Energy to produce Figure LAN21 in the Land theme of Australia State of the Environment 2016, available at https://soe.environment.gov.au/theme/land/topic/2016/soil-formation-and-erosion#land-figure-LAN21
