A geochronological transect across the Tasmanides: New U-Pb zircon ages for Victorian granites

This report describes new U-Pb zircon geochronology data from granitoid rocks collected across Victoria as part of Geoscience Australia’s $225m Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program. The current work was undertaken to address the relative dearth of modern geochronology in Victoria when compared to other jurisdictions and provides new ages for 25 granitoid rocks spanning all tectonic zones in Victoria. The final 25-sample set yielded ages ranging from 493.8 to 365.7 Ma and represents a 25% increase in the U-Pb zircon geochronology coverage of Victoria.

The tectono-stratigraphic evolution of Victoria is spatially sub-divided into ten zones. These zones are named, from west to east, Glenelg, Grampians-Stavely, Stawell, Bendigo, Melbourne, Tabberabbera, Omeo, Deddick, Kuark, and Mallacoota. This record documents these new ages and their implications for crustal evolution across the state.
