The Adavale Basin Stratigraphic Drilling Project is part of a pre-competitive stratigraphic drilling and geoscience research program designed to answer fundamental science questions and assess the minerals, energy, groundwater and underground storage potential of the Adavale Basin of central Queensland. The new drilling data will be assessed along with existing chemostratigraphic, seismic, airborne electromagnetic and airborne gravity gradiometry datasets derived from Geoscience Australia’s Trusted Environmental and Geological Information (TEGI) Program, and legacy industry data, as part of the Data Driven Discoveries (DDD) program and Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative. The combined data will provide new pre-competitive information on the likelihood of discovering large halite deposits in the Adavale Basin with the potential to support the geological storage of hydrogen as part of a future low carbon economy and the Australian Government’s net zero plan. The project was undertaken in collaboration with the Queensland Government represented by the Geological Survey of Queensland.

Authority to drill the stratigraphic borehole was obtained under the Queensland Mineral Resources Act 1989 as part of Exploration Permit for Minerals other than coal 29109 (EPM 29109). Aztech Well Construction were the holder and operator of EPM 29109 on Geoscience Australia’s behalf.

In August 2025, Aztech commissioned a new water bore into the Eromanga Basin to supply drilling water for a separate deep stratigraphic borehole into the Adavale Basin. The new water bore is licensed under the Queensland Water Act 2000 as Registered Number (RN) 211534.
