Airborne electromagnetics at an unprecedented scale

Created 17/10/2025

Updated 17/10/2025

Airborne electromagnetics is a key technique being used by Geoscience Australia to achieve its goal of mapping cover thickness, and opening up new mineral provinces. Using an overview of theory and examples we will demonstrate how airborne electromagnetic data requires careful assessment and calibration before being used successfully. Ongoing development and recent innovations related to our data inversion technology will be discussed, both to address some of the difficulties, and to generate conductivity models with attached uncertainties. We will also show examples of how we are utilising the method for regional scale mapping in Northern Australia at unprecedented scales. Dr Ross Brodie, Dr Yusen Ley-Cooper and Laurence Davies are members of the Geophysical Acquisition and Processing Section at Geoscience Australia. They specialise in the contract management , quality control and quantitative interpretation of airborne electromagnetic surveys. This talk is presented as part of the Distinguished Geoscience Australia Lecturer series on 11 July 2018.
