This teacher guide and student activity resource uses map-based datasets found within the Geoscience Australia data portal (GA portal) to introduce critical minerals, strategic materials, and their relationship to geology and topography in Australia. This resource explains how to access datasets for surface geology, elevation, critical mineral and strategic material deposits and mine locations across Australia. The document includes an introduction to accessing and understanding each dataset, three case study examples of critical mineral and strategic material deposits in Australia, and mine operation concepts like extraction processes and end-of-mine rehabilitation and remediation. Each activity includes instructions on how to access and use the Geoscience Australia data portal as well as questions that prompt students to find, record, and interpret the data. Separate answer sheet is also provided. The activities are suitable for use with secondary to senior secondary science and geography students.
