Coloured dissolved organic matter dynamics in the Great Barrier Reef

Created 23/06/2025

Updated 23/06/2025

793 discrete measurements were collected on the Great Barrier Reef from coastal and offshore regions from 2004 – 2017. Full-depth continuous conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles were recorded on a Seabird SB19Plus at each site before water sample collection using Niskin bottles. Samples were analysed for chorophyll-a pigment concentration (chl a), inorganic nutrients (NH4+, NO3−/NO2−, and HPO42), particulate organic matter (particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN) and particulate phosphorous (PP), coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) were collected at discrete sampling depths depending on the water column depth. Coloured dissolved organic matter was studied to provide information about the characteristics and dynamics of the dissolve organic carbon (DOC) fraction.
