Detonation of explosives, Tadji, New Guinea

Created 17/10/2025

Updated 17/10/2025

This report discusses the proposed detonation of surplus R.A.A.F. bombs at Tadji, New Guinea. A visit was made to the bomb area in March, 1948, to observe the problems involved in detonating the bombs en masse for the purpose of a seismological study of the crustal layering of the island. Various localities in New Guinea, Papua and the neighbouring islands were visited to estimate the practicability of installing temporary seismic stations to record the detonation.
