A CYG area is an area or precinct where EPA knows groundwater has been contaminated by: • an activity • waste • pollution • contaminated land. CYG areas are where contaminant levels threaten one or more environmental values. The groundwater in a CYG area may not be suitable for some uses. It may be harmful to human health and the environment. It's important for anyone who wants to use groundwater in CYG areas to test it to make sure it's safe to use. Each CYG area has a status to help you understand how much groundwater investigation and clean-up has been done. EPA assigns a CYG area one of 3 statuses: 1. Post remediation – clean-up of groundwater has been done, but some groundwater contamination remains. All former groundwater quality restricted use zones (GQRUZs) have this status. 2. Under assessment – further monitoring, evaluation and/or remediation of the groundwater is expected. 3. Precinct – the source of groundwater contamination is not clear. There's evidence it comes from multiple sites. Clean-up of the groundwater cannot be effectively completed. When a particular area is not captured by a CYG area, it does not mean that the groundwater there is suitable for use. The groundwater may not have been tested. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the CYG area data published. EPA will not be held liable or responsible for any errors, or for any loss incurred from reliance on this data.
