Prescribed Vegetation Classification System

Download Data The Prescribed Vegetation Classification System (PVCS) supports project proponents, and qualified persons acting on their behalf, to implement the Replanting Native Forest and Woodland Ecosystems Method within the Nature Repair Market. The dataset is primarily derived from the Native Vegetation Information System (NVIS) and the state-based vegetation classifications from which NVIS is assembled. It provides information on the native forest and woodland ecosystems in eligible areas under the Replanting Native Forest and Woodlands method and their natural distributions.  You can use the Prescribed Vegetation Classification to identify appropriate reference ecosystems to underpin biodiversity projects. The method requires that a map of the Prescribed Vegetation Classification only be used as a guide and this map (using the raster datasets) is provided through Platform for Land and Nature Repair (PLANR) for an area of interest. Justification of the selection of a particular reference ecosystem must be provided to the Clean Energy Regulator based on the Prescribed Vegetation Classification, appropriate field survey information and other evidence. A point method join was used to merge national and state-based datasets together to form a list of ecosystem type with other attribution.

The PVCS is derived from a series of datasets extracted in February 2025 as follows: The National Vegetation Information System Version 7.0Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation of Australia Version 7.0Replanting Native Forest and Woodland Ecosystems Method Eligible RegionsGlobal Ecosystem Topology Level 3State and territory vegetation datasets including:ACTGOV Vegetation Map 2023NSW State Vegetation Type MapTASVEGBiodiversity status of pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystems -Queensland seriesSouth Australia Native Vegetation MappingWestern Australia Native Vegetation MappingVictoria Ecological Vegetation Classes (pre1750)Available through this download includes:10 raster datasets representing the ecosystem types (supplied in tif format)a raster lookup table that can be joined on ID field to the raster datasets.the PCVS spreadsheet that can be used to investigate other ecosystem types that are in eligible IBRA region and surrounds.More information is available on the Nature Repair Market or via the Platform for Land and Nature Repair (PLANR).
