Gravity modelling and monitoring of Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS) in the Shipwreck Trough, Otway Basin

As part of the Resourcing Australia Prosperity initiative (RAPi), Geoscience Australia is undertaking the assessment of Geological Carbon Sequestration (GCS) in parts of Australia. Work has started with basin modelling of the Shipwreck Trough in the Otway Basin. This modelling work will help define and quantify the best targets for GCS in the area. If formations are identified for sequestration, they will need monitoring to ensure that there is no leakage of CO2.

Expected changes in fluid density makes time-lapse gravimetry a potentially useful method for monitoring storage. It is possible to model how changes in density, due to CO2 injection, may affect gravity response over time. Changes in gravity response can be used to map the saturation of CO2 to show plume migration.

While this method has been used in other environments, we investigate the feasibility and challenges of applying it to Carbon Capture and Storage within the Waarre Formation in the Shipwreck Trough.

Abstract prepared for the Australasian Exploration Geoscience Conference AEGC2025.
