Very large volumes of whole-rock geochemistry data are generated by the mineral exploration industry, with much of this data being lodged with State and Territory governments under legislation governing mineral exploration reporting. The motivation for this Pilot Project arises from the recognition that the wealth of geochemical information that is routinely collected and reported by the mineral exploration industry could be even more valuable and more widely used across jurisdictional borders and at national scale if data reporting standards were more uniform across jurisdictions and that common data issues are remediated or removed from the dataset in a transparent and repeatable way.

The Industry Geochemistry Compilation (IGC) Pilot Project is an initiative led by Geoscience Australia and contracted to RSC Global Pty Ltd (AusTender CN4143262) to evaluate the feasibility and value of creating a national coverage, open-file, industry drillhole geochemistry dataset. The Pilot Project ran from March to June 2025 and includes two related projects, Project 1 and Project 2, which were run in parallel.

Project 1 focused on developing a robust and repeatable data structure, and on cleaning and validating geochemical and spatial data, and is delivered as a Western Australia case study in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA). Key outputs from Project 1 include a cleaned and validated compilation of high-quality industry drillhole multi-element geochemical data, along with the workflow for creating this dataset, delivered as modular, efficient, and well-documented Python code.

Project 2 assessed the scope of work for a national scale data compilation, documenting the rationale and business case for the IGC Pilot Project, reviewing each state/territory geological surveys’ industry geochemistry data holdings, and developing a proposed data architecture for the IGC. Recommendations were made for an optimal data structure for industry submissions and a potential workflow to incorporate each geological survey industry geochemistry dataset into a national compilation was presented.
