An important goal of geoscientific advancement in Australia is a 'holistic understanding of our continent so that we might better predict the location of large-scale mineral systems' (Searching the Deep Earth, Academy of Science's UNCOVER group). This includes a better understanding of the growth of the Australian crust, which can be mapped using granites, and related igneous rocks. This is particularly true when studies of these rocks are combined with isotopic tracers, such as samarium-neodymium (Sm-Nd), which can effectively 'see through' the granite and provide a way to map the middle to lower continental crust. This approach was demonstrated by Geoscience Australia for the Archean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, where it was shown that regional scale Sm-Nd signatures in granites were able to map crustal architecture and that this architecture had unexpected correlations with mineralisation.
