NSW koala baseline survey 2025

Created 18/12/2025

Updated 18/12/2025

The statewide koala baseline survey is a collection of datasets and reports that detail the distribution of koala occupancy and koala abundance across NSW in 2025. The baseline survey covers the plausible range of koalas in NSW and over 1,000 sites were sampled across land tenures using heat-sensing drones and passive acoustic recorders. The survey also provides a baseline population estimate from which to evaluate koala population trends over time.

An additional 2,500 sites from other koala programs were used for the modelling analysis - these sites are not included in these datasets and are available through Bionet or will be publicly released according to individual program timelines.
