The project will apply validated regional hydrodynamic models and collect oceanographic data relevant to a number of ongoing research projects being undertaken within the Ningaloo Marine Park.WAMSI Project 2.3 is developing and interpreting regional and coastal scale models to downscale global model results of future ocean climate change scenarios to the Ningaloo Reef Tract. Broad-scale observations of ocean current and temperature from moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and temperature loggers will be used to better describe the general circulation characteristics of the region and provide a validation data set for a suite of numerical models implemented in this region as part of WAMSI Project 2.3. These data will also aid in the interpretation of global modelling results of this region that indicate significant late winter/spring eddy driven upwelling.Broad scale hydrographic stations from shipboard and glider-borne water column profiling will map 3-dimensional regional distributions of ocean temperature, salinity and chlorophyll, and provide knowledge on cross shelf exchange processes.Deployments near-shore of ADCPs, temperature loggers and surface drifters will describe the fine- scale near- reef circulation processes including lagoonal flushing rates and recirculation. These data will be used as validation for numerical models developed as part of WAMSI projects 2.3 and 3.5.
