Prioritisation of marine ecological values in coastal Tasmania - MEPP

This dataset was developed for inclusion in the Oil Spill Response Atlas (OSRA) to prioritise areas for planning activities on the basis of marine ecological values. The dataset includes the entire Tasmanian coast, consisting of the mainland coast, Macquarie Island and all other islands within Tasmania’s jurisdiction. The coast was divided into 20 km segments arranged orthogonally to the coast (i.e compliant with coastal features and shape), measured using absolute ‘point-to-point’ distances. Coastal segments extended 10 km offshore, with small islands grouped with the adjacent mainland coast or larger islands where they occurred <10 km from the larger feature. A total of 14 criteria, including eight within a ‘species’ resource category and six within a ‘habitat/protected site’ resource category were developed to prioritise marine ecological values. The rating scale for criteria included five categories - very high, high, moderate, low and very low - reflecting very high through to very low ecological values respectively. Data from a range of existing spatial and non-spatial sources were used to determine segment ratings for each criterion, and ultimately for each resource category and overall. Segment ratings for each resource category (i.e. species and habitats/protected sites) were determined by the single most highly rated value/s, while the overall final rating for the segment was determined by the highest rating for any single resource category. The ratings were based on the highest value present at any time through the year; i.e. separate seasonal ratings were not determined, however a lookup table was provided to the data custodian indicating monthly variation in the presence or breeding status of species. Segments are colour coded based on their rating category, with thematic maps for each resource category and individual criterion available to supplement the overall ratings map. A project report was prepared for the data custodian, providing detailed methodology and further explanation of the dataset.
