Exploring for the Future (EFTF) Programme’s energy component aims to improve our understanding of the hydrocarbon potential of Northern Australia, initially focusing on the Isa and Roper Superbasins of the Northern Territory and Queensland. These Proterozoic sedimentary basins have the potential to host both conventional hydrocarbon accumulations and unconventional accumulations in the form of shale or tight gas. While the McArthur Basin has been comprehensively studied, little attention has been given to the likely coeval South Nicholson Basin and Lawn Hill Platform that straddle the Queensland and Northern Territory border. This study consists of two major components. Firstly, we aim to understand the source-reservoir relationships of the Fickling, McNamara and South Nicholson groups in more detail; determining organic richness, kerogen type, generative ability, maturation, expulsiuon efficiency and petrophysical and geomechanical properties. We will compare these results to the McArthur Basin, where proven unconventional petroleum systems are currently being explored. Secondly, we undertake a detailed geochemical investigation of fluids in the region. Oil stains, and gas from fluid inclusions have been analysed with the aim of completing gas-oil-source correlations, providing more certainty of petroleum systems and understanding the timing and preservation of fluids. The results of this study will be used to generate statistics quantifying the spatial distribution, quantity and quality of source rocks, source rock maps and new insights into the petroleum systems and hydrocarbon prospectivity of Northern Australia.
