ReefCloud public data (Australia, 2006-2024)

What is this dataset?

This repository is associated with the paper Predicting coral trends and attributing drivers of change from local to global scales by Vercelloni et al. It provides all the information needed to reproduce Case Study 1 presented in the paper, using the code available at: GitHub repository.

What is used for?

The datasets associated with the repository inform a broad spatial-scale predictive model, which predict annual hard coral cover across all known coral reefs (both monitored and unmonitored) in the region by incorporating a spatial grid and information about the environment (currently cyclone activity and degree heating weeks).

How it was created?

The predictive model uses coral cover data aggregated into 5×5km hexagonal units (tier 5 units). Individual monitoring observations from the public ReefCloud platform within the same tier 5 unit are aggregated. In addition, the spatial grid and information on inshore and offshore reefs are also provided in the repository for reproduciblity.
