Sedimentary dynamics, central Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea

Created 24/06/2025

Updated 24/06/2025

Samples were collected from 44 stations (using box, gravity, kasten, or multicorers) along several inshore-offshore transects between January 1999 and May 2004. These were organised by season of collection: NW Monsoon (December to March); SE Trades (late May to late October); and Transition (March to late May).Levels of particulate organic carbon (POC) were determined on bulk sediment and suspended particles. Chlorophyll a, phaeophytin a, and total phaeophytin were estimated. To asess the role of intertidal mudbanks in the storage, utilisation and export of nutrients from the Fly River delta to the adjacent Gulf of Papua. This data is a complemenary to a set held by J. Aller, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York, USA. For an outline of the extent of that data, see:Aller J, Alongi DM and Aller R (2008) Biological indicators of sedimentary dynamics in the central Gulf of Papua: Seasonal and decadal perspectives. Journal of Geophysical Research 113: F01S08.Additional information is held about the Fly River and the Gulf of Papua for which there are separate metadata records.
