South Alligator River geophysical survey, Northern Territory 1961

Updated 17/10/2025

A self-potential survey of 21 areas between El Sherana and Coronation Hill in the South Alligator River uranium field was made at the request of United Uranium N.L. between June and August 1961. Routine radiometric surveys were also made over all but two of the areas. Negative self-potential anomalies of 400 to 600 mV extending over distances of 800 to 1700 feet were found in six of the 21 areas. Quantitative analysis has shown that these anomalies can be accounted for by narrow vertical, or near-vertical, conducting beds. Wagon. drilling of three of the areas of strong self-potential anomalies has located carbonaceous shale, and encouraging amounts of uranium mineralization have also been found at El Sherana North-West. Recommendations are made for wagon-drilling of the other strong anomalies.
