Surface-wave magnitudes of some early Australian earthquakes

Created 17/10/2025

Updated 17/10/2025

Surface-wave magnitudes (Ms) of 35 of the larger Australian earthquakes that occurred before 1960 have been determined from seismograms written at Riverview (Sydney), Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Magnitudes were computed by the methods of Nuttli (1973) and Marshall and Basham (1973) and found to be consistent. Empirical corrections were applied to the horizontal component recordings to bring them into agreement with vertical component amplitudes, implicit in the definition of the Ms scale. Richter magnitudes (ML) were plotted against the adopted (average) surface-wave magnitudes for 19 earthquakes for which ML values were available. However, the scatter of the data precludes the adoption of a definitive relation for MS on ML for the Australian continent.
