A new genus and species of marine mite, Xenohalacarus longirostris n. sp. was described from Chilcott Islet in the Coral Sea. One female, 1 male and 3 deutonymphs were extracted from coarse coral sand collected from the reef slope at Chilcott Islet on 14 September 1998. The reef slope was covered with algae, hydroids and rubble. This research was conducted as part of a survey of marine mites from northern Australia. The holotype, a female (QMS105614) and paratypes, a male (QMS105615) and 3 deutonymphs (QMS 105616-105618) were lodged with the Museum of Tropical Queensland, Townsville.
