Data Driven Discoveries Adavale Basin Deep Crustal Seismic Survey (L215) Processed data release and early insights

The Data Driven Discoveries program is a $30.9 million initiative led by Geoscience Australia in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Queensland. The program aims to re-examine decades old seismic data and collect new geoscientific data to identify opportunities for resource discovery in the Adavale Basin located in south-central Queensland. This program supports the Australian Government’s plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 by researching opportunities for hydrogen storage, groundwater and minerals within the basin and surrounding areas. A key component of the program is the Adavale Basin Deep Crustal Seismic Survey (L215), which was acquired from April to July 2023 and collected 1,715 line-km of deep crustal seismic data across the Adavale Basin, Belyando Basin and Warrabin Trough. The survey encompassed seven regional seismic lines (23GA-A1 to 23GA-A7) covering areas near the towns of Adavale, Charleville, Augathella and Blackall in the Adavale Basin, and extending westward through the Warrabin Trough towards Windorah and northward beyond Jericho to the Belyando Basin. The new seismic survey builds upon work previously published by the program, including the Adavale Basin 2D Reprocessed Seismic Data Package (Geoscience Australia, 2023) and the newly defined chemostratigraphic framework (Riley et al., 2023b). These efforts have significantly enhanced the understanding of the basin's stratigraphy, hydrogeology, resource potential, and underground salt storage opportunities. The modern, high-fold deep seismic reflection dataset produced by the new seismic survey delivers valuable insights into both shallow and deep crustal structures.
